Special Event: Happy 20th Birthday to the World’s Oldest Dog. my
As our furry friends get older, we often get to see their personalities shine through. That’s why I have a soft spot for senior dogs. One of America’s most beloved breeds is the Golden Retriever, and one of its members has made headlines for a remarkable accomplishment. Augie, who is lovingly called by her owners, recently celebrated a record-breaking birthday. She defied the odds by surpassing the average lifespan for her breed, making history as the oldest known living Golden Retriever worldwide, according to the GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue.
Meet Augie, a cherished canine who calls Oakland, Tennessee her home alongside her adoptive guardians Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt. Despite being an extraordinary dog, Augie had to go through multiple households throughout her life. It was unfortunate that she had been returned to the rescue center twice after being adopted and rehomed. However, Jennifer and Steve came to the rescue and gave her the affectionate and permanent home she deserved – all at the age of 14. Despite her age, Augie was still in fairly good health when she was adopted for the last time.
To make Jennifer’s important birthday memorable, she and Steve planned a small celebration. The decorations were impressive, and their cherished golden retriever, Augie, was treated to a delicious dog-friendly carrot cake, which she savored with delight. Augie also had a lovely time socializing with her furry siblings, Belle, Sherman, and Bruce, making her day even more enjoyable. Remarkably, Augie is still healthy and agile at 20 years old, albeit a little unsteady when getting up. Nonetheless, she loves going for daily walks around the yard, and overall, she is a happy and fulfilled dog.
At 20 years old, Augie the Golden Retriever has outlived her anticipated lifespan of 10 years, and still displays a remarkable zest for life. Her story is touching, particularly given that she has finally found a family who adores her. As pet owners, it’s crucial to appreciate each moment spent with our pets and make their wellbeing a top concern to help them lead fulfilling lives. It’s no wonder that Goldens are such exceptional pets!
